Indie Releases Crash Labor Day Party

By Tim Briody

Oh, Hello Kitty. You're the only one that understands me.

Traditionally, Labor Day is the worst weekend of the year for the box office, and this one is no exception, with the one wide release DOA. But three independent releases will manage to sneak into the top ten, making it an interesting weekend nonetheless.

feardotcom

While last year's Jeepers Creepers was a Labor Day surprise, all is once again right with the world, as Warner Bros.' feardotcom takes in an estimated $1.8 million Friday in 2,550 theaters. Standard horror film rules apply here, giving the Internet thriller a weekend in the neighborhood of $5.5 million.

Holdovers

After returning to number one last weekend, Signs looks to stay there with a $3.4 million Friday. Off only 23% from last Friday, Signs is one of the few summer films that has been able to buck the "huge opening, then freefall" trend that has become the rule rather than the exception when it comes to the box office.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding continues its roll, making a valiant effort for the number one spot, but looks to fall just short. The word-of-mouth smash brought in an estimated $2.8 million Friday, an increase of 34% over last weekend. The crowd pleaser should end up with $11 million this weekend. Not good enough for the top position, but it makes it a lock for $100 million.

The only opener from last week to remain in the top ten this weekend, Serving Sara, falls 49% from last Friday with an estimated $1 million. The plunge only gets worse from here.

Matthew Perry is on one end of the box office spectrum, while his Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston appears to be on the other. The Good Girl jumps into the top ten after adding 479 theaters, with a $780,000 Friday. It should end up with about $3 million for the weekend. Good enough for a top ten finish, but the PSA leaves much to be desired with regards to future expansion.

Finally, completing the art house triumvirate, we have One Hour Photo. Moving from seven theaters last weekend to 163 this week, the Robin Williams vehicle squeaks into the top ten, with an estimated $715,000 Friday. It should be the first film since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to make the top ten in under 200 theaters. The PSA will also certainly be impressive, so we'll have to see what develops (sorry) with this film over the next few weeks.

Check back later this weekend for the full weekend's estimates and analysis.
