This was one of the first years that Hollywood's obsession with
holding back pictures until December for better Oscar consideration
really affected my year. Sure, it's always a rush in January to catch
up with the important films, but only two of the films in my top ten
list came out before the first half of the year. It was worth the
wait, though, as it turned out to be one of the highest quality years
I've experienced as a full-time movie goer. Summer blockbusters
delivered (sequels excepted), so-called "quality" films were
plentiful and I got to add a couple more films to my potential
all-time favourites. It's tough to ask for much more than that. Five
honorable mentions: Catch Me If You Can, The Bourne Identity, The
Ring, Barbershop and Minority Report.

Best Defilation of a Classic
Let's say you're making a sequel to a
beloved sports movie of 25 years ago. So the legendary Oscar-winning
star of the first has laughed in your face about returning. What you
do have is a trio of wacky characters that have become cult icons who
are ready, willing and able to star in the film. Do you: A) Build the
plot around them, B) Leave them to the side but still get them plenty
of scenes, or C) Hire a Baldwin and give your cult icons five minutes
of screen time? If you're the producers of Slap Shot 2, you
apparently answer C and are left wondering why your film ended up
premiering on video. Congratulations on decision making that rivals
Caddyshack 2 in the "whoa, those Hollywood types have some good
drugs" category.
