Welcome to How to Spend $20, BOP's look at the latest DVDs to hit stores nationwide. This week: Mary Louise-Parker keeps her marijuana business running smoothly, the Scary Movie people further kill the movie spoof genre, football fans rejoice at the chance to see Super Bowl XLII one more time and Will Ferrell shows off his mad dribblin' skills.
PICK OF THE WEEK For people who enjoy moms who can roll their own fatty: Weeds: Season Three
Everyone's favorite mother of two - who moonlights as a suburban pot dealer - is back with new episodes beginning June 16th on Showtime. To help pass the time before the start of season four, familiarize yourself with the Emmy-nominated comedy's third season, said to be the last located in the familiar Agrestic neighborhood. Due to plot complications from last season, Nancy and her family were forced to head south to the beach town of Ren Mar on the San Diego/Mexico border. R.I.P. little boxes!
Disc includes: Eight commentaries with cast and crew including creator Jenji Kohan and actors Justin Kirk, Hunter Parrish and Alexander Gould, among others; Uncle AWOL featurette with Justin Kirk; G.M.A. – Good Morning Agrestic! featurette; "Little Boxes" Randy Newman featurette; Mary-Kate Olsen biography; gag reel; trivia; Weeds soundtrack sampler; Little Boxes musical montage.
For people who miss the days when spoofs like Airplane! were being produced: Meet the Spartans
From the writing team behind such beloved spoofs as the Scary Movie franchise, Date Movie and Epic Movie comes Meet the Spartans, a spoof of 300 and other films like it earlier this year. Of the film's 43 reviews compiled on Rotten Tomatoes, just one reviewer liked it. Yes, one. And I hesitate to even count you, Miss Kam Williams from NewsBlaze, as you also gave the Prince Caspian misfire a perfect four stars! My favorite Meet the Spartans reviewer, though, has to be Slate's Josh Levin, who says: "This was the worst movie I've ever seen, so bad that I hesitate to label it a 'movie' and thus reflect shame upon the entire medium of film."
So, if you haven't picked up on it already, this is not so much a recommendation to go out and buy this thing, but rather, this is to ensure that you're familiar enough with the title so you can avoid Meet the Spartans completely. Oh, and due yourself a favor and take Disaster Movie, a spoof from the same people supposedly due out later thus summer, off your calendar, too.
Disc includes: Audio commentary, gag reel.
For people who frequently wonder about the secrets behind a well-trained clown: Twisted: Balloonamentary
From the mind of a Daily Show producer, Sara Taksler, comes a documentary based on one of the most basic of documented objects: balloons. From a flying octopus, a trojan horse and, of course, your average balloon dog, Balloonamentary takes viewers into the heart of Twist and Shout, a premiere balloon twisting convention, while following the lives of eight such balloon artists and why they take their talent so frickin' seriously. And there's even a special surprise for you Daily Show devotees: Jon Stewart narrates the documentary's animated sequences.
Disc includes: Bare bones.
For people with low self-esteem: Flavor of Love: The Complete Unrated Third Season/I Love New York: Complete Unrated Second Season
Remember the days when VH1 went by the slogan "Music First" and only targeted itself to people who wear mom jeans and like contemporary rock artists like John Mayer and The Dixie Chicks? A lot has changed since those years. And one of the most influential reasons why VH1 transformed itself into a thing perhaps even more sophomoric than MTV is in the phenomenal ratings success of its Celebreality block, featuring minor celebrities in foolishly-themed television shows. What began with The Surreal Life and other shows like it quickly spawned into a variety of spinoffs and lookalikes. From that you got Flavor of Love, a show that asks the simple question: Who does Public Enemy's Flavor Flav want to date? And Americans loved the ridiculousness, in which an out-of-his-mind Flav kicked off a lady each episode (ala Survivor) to find his hottie, all of whom were given original nicknames like Bubblez, Picasso and Red Oyster. The series' final season, season three, is out of DVD today, along with the release of I Love New York: Complete Unrated Second Season, a show in which popular Flavor of Love contestant New York (Tiffany Pollard) tries to find her sugar daddy.
Flavor of love disc includes: Casting special; Flav's filosophies; Girls Gone Flav: Ultimate Moments; Dirty Laundry; Flav and Thing 2's Parisian date; The Dead Bring Bad Luck; supertrailer.
I Love New York disc includes: Reunion special; casting special; supertrailer.
For people who believe in miracles: NY Giants: Road to Super Bowl XLII (Collector's Edition)
For New England Patriots fans - and perhaps even New York Giants fans - who still can't believe how the quick, hot-streak David was able to defeat the nearly perfect Goliath, take a trip down memory lane with this DVD, which showcases the game that knocked NFL's premiere team from unbeatable to a mere 18-1. But you can forgo the highlight reel on this one. Instead, this four-disc DVD set includes the complete, uncut network broadcast of Super Bowl XLII, the first time an entire Super Bowl has been made available for your viewing pleasure.
Disc includes: Super Bowl XLII's complete network broadcast, both playoff victories that got the N.Y. Giants into the title game.
For people who are generally curious as to what Denis Leary is up to these days: Rescue Me: The Complete Fourth Season
Similar to the predicament that fans of 24 found themselves in earlier this year, FX's summer drama staple, Rescue Me, will also be absent from TV airwaves this year due to the writers' strike. The show's fifth season, super-sized at 22 episodes, has been delayed to March 2009. To help ease the pain of fans who are losing an actual good hour of television this summer - because Celebrity Circus isn't exactly good television - catch yourself up on the latest season of Denis Leary's popular cable project.
Disc includes: Walking Through Fire: The Stories of Rescue Me Season 4; Real Stories from America's Bravest featurette; Welcome to the Set featurette; This Is Not a Drill: Breaking Down Episode 407 featurette; Captains featurette; Tools of the Trade featurette; Burning Embers: Gavin's Girls featurette; deleted scenes; blooper/gag reel; Minisode: Married...with Children – "If Al Had a Hammer"; Minisode: Starsky & Hutch – "Death Notice."
For people who think Will Ferrell can be funny doing just about anything: Semi-Pro (Special Edition) Will Ferrell's latest - and hopefully final - movie that puts a comedic spin on sports is out on DVD today. In this one, Ferrell stars as Jackie Moon, the owner, player and coach of the Flint, Michigan Tropics, who must ensure that his American Basketball Association teammates make their NBA dreams come true. Ferrell surrounded himself with a strong cast - Woody Harrelson, Will Arnett, Andy Richter, Rob Corddry and Maura Tierney, among others. Of course, that doesn't always mean the end product is good, which is exactly what happened here.
Disc includes: Love Me Sexy – The Story Behind the One-Hit-Wonder featurette; Recreating the American Basketball Association (ABA) featurette; Four Days in Flint featurette; The Man Behind Semi-Pro featurette; Behind the scenes footage with Bill Walton, Bob Costas and "Dick Pepperfield"; Love Me Sexy" music video; theatrical teasers and trailers.
