Friday Box Office Analysis

Tyler Perry's latest play to film adaptation is easily the number one film on Friday with $8.6 million. While this is a big step back from earlier this year, when Madea Goes to Jail had a first day take of $14.7 million in February, it's right in line with his other recent films that didn't have Madea in the title (which is mildly ironic since this actually is another Madea film), such as Why Did I Get Married?, The Family That Preys and Meet the Browns. Weekend multipliers for Tyler Perry films have been somewhat erratic with Madea Goes to Jail, his biggest hit to date, having a 2.78, reversing a trend of diminishing returns. I Can Do Bad All By Myself will cruise to the top with $22.3 million for the weekend.

After a Wednesday opening (9/9/09, remember) where it earned $4.4 million in two days, 9 takes a distant second to Tyler Perry with $3.3 million on Friday. The screencount and the fact that it's really not for younger audiences are a big limiting factor here. There's a really good chance for a 2.73 weekend multiplier here (do the math) but I think it'll nudge up a little bit more than that. Look for a weekend of $9.6 million which is a five day total of $14 million.

Two weeks after the Final Destination/[tm:4814_]Halloween II[/tm] double feature, Sorority Row does not come even close to duplicating the success of those openings, with a mere $1.9 million on Friday. Perhaps September 11th was not the right date to release something that has a bunch of coeds getting brutally murdered. Call it a $5 million weekend.

As critically reviled as last week's [tm:4498_]All About Steve[/tm], [bp:196_]Kate Beckinsale[/bp]'s Whiteout earned $1.7 million. Take a hot actress and send her all bundled up to Antarctica, yeah, that's the ticket! Give this disaster $4.6 million for the weekend.
