Hollywood phones it in for the second weekend in a row, but at least this time there’s some intrigue at the top spot.
War Room/Straight Outta Compton
With a crop of new releases that somehow manages to throw under last weekend, faith-based release War Room manages to knock off Straight Outta Compton on Friday with $3.9 million on Friday to Straight Outta Compton’s $3.8 million. With War Room in just 1,135 theaters, compared to Compton’s 3,142, this is an impressive feat. The two films are going to be neck and neck through the weekend, especially if War Room has a big Sunday push (which is possible with faith-based films). War Room has a shot at pulling out the weekend title. Straight Outta Compton’s $12.1 million should be just enough to top War Room’s $11.7 million for a third weekend and makes it just the fourth film of 2015 to spend three or more weekends at the top.
No Escape
Starting on Wednesday (sigh) with just $1.2 million, No Escape earns $2.4 million on Friday after $2 million in its first two days of release. Starring those notable action stars Owen Wilson and Lake Bell, No Escape is looking at just $6.7 million on the weekend and $8.7 million in five days.
We Are Your Friends
Instantly one of the biggest wide release flops of the year, Zac Efron’s We Are Your Friends musters only $725,000 in 2,333 theaters. It’s looking at $2 million on the weekend as Efron counts down the days until Neighbors 2.
