How to Spend $20

For people who hate it when their grocery store cart has one bad wheel: The Road
Cormac McCarthy’s The Road is in all probability one of the most disturbing novels I’ve ever read. (In particular, any moments pertaining to those cannibalistic nomads who scour the country for human flesh). Awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, The Road takes place after a vague and unnamed apocalyptic event renders earth nearly lifeless. A father and son journey across the grim landscape together in search of the sea, which is somewhere south.
When a film adaptation was announced, I knew I’d wait to see it at home. For me, watching a movie as, well, depressing as The Road on the big screen seemed like a giant waste of capital. Why spend the money on it – or a movie like Precious, or My Sister’s Keeper, or Towelhead (all which I’ve read) – when going in I knew the end result would be anything but entertaining? That’s more or less my philosophy on the movies. (Of course there are exceptions, but they’re few).
The Road gets released today on DVD and Blu-ray after earning just $23.9 million in its coffers ($8.1 million of that coming from U.S theaters). Based on 187 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, The Road maintains a 75% Fresh rating, yet failed to be the award season contender that The Weinstein Company probably expected it to be.

For people who think Neil Patrick Harris has the voice of an angel: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog [Blu-ray]
Joss Whedon’s Internet project during the WGA writers’ strike fiasco, the wildly popular Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, debuts in Blu-ray today after being released on DVD as an Amazon.com exclusive in 2008 and a New Video Group release the following year. The three episode web series stars Neil Patrick Harris as the titular character, an aspiring supervillain who falls for the same girl (Felicia Day) as his nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion).
