Friday Box Office Analysis
By Tim Briody
March 15, 2008
Horton Hears a Who continues the trend of solid openings in March, but it's all downhill after that.
Horton Hears a Who
The Dr. Seuss adaptation opens well, with $13.4 million. Horton is the first solid option for families in weeks, as well as the first CGI animated film of 2008 (remember when it seemed like there was one of these every other week?) As such, it should have an astronomically high weekend multiplier. I'm going with 3.8, which is just enough to cross $50 million and thus make some nice headlines.
Never Back Down
The teen fighting drama (?) checks in with $3.2 million Friday, and there's really not much more to say about it other than I'm glad I don't have to see those silly commercials for it anymore. A weekend total of $8.6 million is in store for Never Back Down.
Doomsday
Speaking of movies I'm tired of seeing commercials for, Doomsday earns a dollar for every single one I've seen, which means it earned $1.7 million Friday. Finishing far below a Resident Evil or even Underworld, this will probably have to find a cult following on DVD if it is any good. I see a $4.7 million weekend.
Notable Holdovers
The epic 10,000 B.C. takes an epic nosedive on Friday, off 60% from a week ago. By virtue of there really being nothing else out there (beyond this, Horton Hears a Who and, barely, Never Back Down, the rest of the top ten is dead weight), it should earn $16.8 million in weekend two.
