Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

After Thursday's take of $25 million, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull took in $30.9 million on Friday. It's not the extreme spike some were expecting, but it's not a downtick either. So as much as I hate to disappoint all of you, we don't really know anything more than we did at this time yesterday.

In yesterday's column, David Mumpower suggested that Crystal Skull will behave more like a family film than your typical GFB flick (see Revenge of the Sith, or last year's Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End). An uptick of about $6 million from the Thursday number neither confirms nor disproves this hypothesis. The Saturday figure is what is key here as to whether "Crystal Skull = family film" was an accurate statement.





There's a completely ridiculous spread right now as to where this could go. You've got two interpretations of Friday's $30.9 million. Either the film is just getting warmed up, and we ain't seen nothing yet as rather than spending hundreds of dollars on gas driving somewhere, parents take their kids down the road to the movie theater to see Indiana Jones. Or you could also see it as the 23.6% increase from Thursday to Friday should've been higher, thus doom and gloom awaits Crystal Skull over the remainder of the long weekend.

I'm not as big a fan as David of the family film theory, but I don't believe that $30.9 million is a disaster, either. I'm going to give it a 3.6 multiplier for the Friday through Monday period, which is $111.2 million. Add in Thursday's figure and that's $136.2 in five days. Again, I could be horribly off in either direction here. We'll know for sure when we get Saturday's figure, which will come around the same time as the full weekend estimate.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian dropped a massive 66% from last Friday's number to $6.6 million. Anyone who was trying to spin its opening weekend as a positive can just stop now, as that kind of drop on a holiday weekend is nothing short of disastrous. It's looking at less than $35 million for the entire four-day weekend unless something changes and people suddenly decide it's worth their hard-earned money.
