Welcome to How to Spend $20, BOP's look at the latest DVDs to hit stores nationwide. This week: Batman flies into retail stores, TV's finest drama gets released in a bundle and Philippe Petit does something crazy.Pick of the WeekFor people who somehow didn't contribute to the $530 million this one earned in domestic theaters: The Dark Knight (Special Edition)
The Dark Knight surprised just about everyone when it made an astonishing $158 million in its opening weekend, easily the best three-day box office number ever (outpacing Spider-Man 3's tally by about $7 million). It became THE story of the summer, knocking down records – biggest weekends, fastest to $xxx million (name your number) – like any old thing. Critics loved it, too. So much so that a superhero movie could be nominated for a few prizes at the upcoming Oscars ceremony, including nods to director Christopher Nolan and the late Heath Ledger.
Surprisingly, the goodies that accompany the DVD release of the Batman Begins sequel are a bit thin. But no matter how you slice it, this one will be stuffed in a ridiculous amount of Christmas stockings on December 25th.
Disc includes: Gotham Uncovered: Creation of a Scene featurette, IMAX scenes, Gotham Tonight: 6 Episodes of Gotham Cable's Premiere News Program, art galleries, The Incredible Gadgets and Tools featurette, Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of The Dark Knight featurette
For people who still have no idea what's going on: Lost: The Complete Fourth Season
Regrettably, the fourth season of Lost was when I stopped watching. Granted I was overseas at the time it aired, so it was either find some contraband copy of it somewhere online (since ABC.com doesn't work properly in Europe) or stay up late to watch Perdidos, Spain's dubbed version of the ABC hit. So part of it was the struggle to find ways to keep up. The other part? Season four's rocky start. I'll compare it to season two of NBC's Heroes. It was so ungodly slow and without entertainment that I decidedly yanked it from my list of TV priorities. But from what I hear through the grapevine, this one finishes pretty strong. Perhaps I yanked the cord a little too soon.
For the first time, the season focused on the characters' escape (finally!) from the mysterious island, with their happenings effectively shown through flash forwards. Season five begins January 21st with a three-hour block of content consisting of a clip show and two new episodes.
Disc includes: Bloopers, Oceanic Airlines Safety Guide, The Lost Flashbacks, audio commentaries, deleted scenes, Lost on Location featurette, Freighter Folk featurette, Transforming Hawaii featurette, Gun Tracking featurette, The Music of Lost featurette
