The results are in for the eighth annual Calvins Awards and the results are obvious. We like The Dark Knight, Iron Man and WALL-E about as much as the rest of you do. Of course, 2008 cinema was about more than that and our results will reflect this. Our complaint for the 2008 Calvins still stands for the 2009 awards, though. The last two years of cinema simply have not been as good as the 2006-2007 voting period had been. We're waiting for Hollywood to go back to dazzling us now that the negative impact stemming from the Writer's Strike has largely abated.

While the overall depth of quality was lacking in calendar 2008, BOP takes this as good news for the Worst Performance and Worst Picture categories while maintaining that the past year was a good one for videogames, music, and particularly television. Our voting in all of those categories was way up and the passionate debate we had in determining our selections reflects the overall excellence in these fields.

As was the case the past two years, we have 18 categories whose results will be revealed over the next five days. We begin today with Best Album, Best Videogame and Best TV Show. The schedule for the rest of the week will see Best Cast, Best Scene, Best DVD and Best Use of Music on Tuesday, Worst Performance, Worst Picture, Best Overlooked Film, and Best Breakthrough Film on Wednesday, the four acting categories on Thursday, and Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture on Friday.
