Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

The return of Gordon Gekko results in a $8 million Friday for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. I think we can chalk this up to a bit of nostalgia over anything else. Additionally, people don't like being reminded about how much the economy sucks when they go to the movies. As we've said on this site before, it's all about escapism. I don't forsee this as having a decent weekend multiplier, and while it's not what you would call a bomb, it would rank as one of the lowest earning wide releases of Shia LaBeouf's career. Chew on that for a minute. Let's give Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps a weekend of $20.8 million.


Legend of the Guardians

The movie with owls in it earned $4.8 million on Friday. Based on yet another young-adult literature series that I'd never heard of until the is film was released, the films in this vein tend to surprise a little bit with their weekend proper performances, so don't be surprised if this checks in with $16.7 million when the weekend estimates arrive.

You Again

Female comedy You Again is the disappointment of the weekend, earning $2.9 million on Friday. As with all of her movies, if the lovely Kristen Bell would like to discuss the box office performance of You Again, I am certainly available. Give it a weekend of $8 million.

Notable Holdovers

The Town holds pretty well, falling 40% from last Friday to $5 million. Word-of-mouth and even a little Oscar buzz will prop this film up over the next few weeks, look for a second frame of $15.5 million.

Easy A drops 44% from last Friday to $3.8 million, which is still fine, as legs are harder to come by for this genre. I like Mean Girls (the last real big high school based film) as a comparison here, it kept its second weekend drop in the low 40's which is what Easy A should do as well, which means a weekend of $10.8 million.
