2011 Academy Awards: Worst Dressed

Cate Blanchett - I don't know where to even begin with this dress. The pale purple Givenchy Couture dress is so totally unflattering, but I can't even pinpoint why. The weird shoulders, the bubbly "texture" of the dress, the yellow detailing, and the weird chest accents - it's just a disaster from start to finish. Blanchett is generally known for dressing elegantly, so I guess she can be forgiven for this one error, but...yikes.

Helena Bonham Carter - While she looked better than she usually does, that's really not saying much. HBC's black corset frock by Colleen Atwood (costume designer for Alice in Wonderland, complete with Union Jack garter, looked utterly ridiculous.Maybe one of these days Helena will actually dress "normally" - but then again, we don't really expect that, do we?

Scarlett Johansson - When attending an event such as the Oscars, it might be a good idea to look like you didn't just roll out of bed to throw yourself into a dress. The dress itself - a burgundy Dolce & Gabanna lace gown - was horribly unflattering, and that's a feat considering ScarJo's figure. Oh, and being able to see your undergarments through your dress is so very Cher circa 1989. I know your marriage just ended, Scarlett, but egads, try to pretend like you give a crap.

Nicole Kidman - Kidman mentioned on the red carpet that she let her daughter pick out her Oscar dress. Maybe it's not a good idea to let a toddler pick out your attire to an event like this. Toddlers like picking out mismatched clothes and wearing capes and princess dresses, so they're probably not the best example of fashion sense, yanno? Her busy Dior dress is too much, especially for someone like Kidman who tends to look best in classic, timeless gowns. While this may have been a good choice for someone like Helena Bonham Carter, it's definitely not for Kidman. Let your daughter play dress-up in a dress like this, Nic.

Gwyneth Paltrow - Gwyneth looked like she was ready to blast into outer space in her super shiny metallic Calvin Klein Collection dress. At least it got her some attention, something she's probably been craving since her Oscar win over a decade ago.

Marisa Tomei - While being interviewed on the red carpet, Marisa Tomei talked about the fact that Lady Gaga wanted Tomei to play her someday in a biopic. It looks like Tomei is already starting to channel Gaga. Her 1950s Charles James couture dress from Lily et Cie was so ill-fitting and unflattering, and her hairdo also screamed "I just got out of bed and didn't feel like styling my hair". She's one step closer to the dress made entirely out of food or a fashionable accessory made from tin.
