Friday Box Office Analysis

Evil Dead
An update of the horror classic pulled in $11.9 million on Friday, which is about five times what the no-budget original earned during its entire run way back in the day. This is a little more than January's horror hits Texas Chainsaw 3D ($10.2 million) and Mama ($10 million) started with, with the series' pedigree and surprisingly good reviews a good explanation for some of the difference. It's still a horror movie and and as such Friday will have been its strongest day, but it's still in line to win the weekend with $30.9 million.
Jurassic Park 3D
The 3D rerelease of the 1993 adventure film by Steven Spielberg earned $7 million on Friday, good for second place on the day. Re-releases are found money for the studios and also generally not very exciting to write about. It will probably be passed by a couple of holdovers, but a weekend of $18.9 million is actually pretty good, if far from the $50 million the 1993 opening weekend earned.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation
After last weekend's opening, The Rock's G.J. Joe sequel drops 58% to $6.4 million. Rise of Cobra's Friday-to-Friday decline was 68% but that one also started higher. The Croods will likely pass it on the rest of the weekend, but it's in line for a second weekend of $19.6 million.
