Friday Box Office Analysis

42
With $9.1 million on Friday, Jackie Robinson biopic 42 is not quite a home run but a solid triple. Coming in ahead of most projections, the film (co-starring Harrison Ford) stands a good chance of finding some legs over the rest of the weekend and the next couple of weeks as a top option for older audiences. Look for an impressive weekend total of $27.3 million
Scary Movie V
Spoof sequel Scary Movie V comes in with $5.5 million on Friday, which is quite a ways off from Scary Movie 4's $19 million Friday on this weekend back in 2006. Granted, that was to be expected given the seven year layoff and the absolutely atrocious looking trailer (and reviews). Scary Movie 4 started strong but fell off dramatically with a 2.11 multiplier for its weekend. Scary Movie V has a much smaller Friday to start with so the multiplier won't be that terrible, but what was supposedly a close race between this and 42 turns into a blowout. Give it a weekend of $12.9 million.
Notable Holdovers
Evil Dead plunges 73.1% from last Friday to $3.2 million, your standard horror film decline. A second weekend of $8.2 million seems just fine.
Jurassic Park 3D dips 65.7% from last Friday to $2.4 million, pretty much in line with how the majority of 3D rereleases perform. Give it a weekend of about $7 million.
