Friday Box Office Analysis
by Tim Briody
August 3, 2013
Denzel and Marky Mark bring 2 Guns to the box office, and that's enough for most audiences.
2 Guns
The Denzel Washington/Mark Wahlberg action buddy comedy 2 Guns starts with a respectable $10 million on Friday. This is fine for the two leads, both of whom have been reliable draws over the last ten years. While it looks pretty by-the-numbers (save for the charisma of Washington and Wahlberg), 2 Guns is a nice change of pace from the unending sequels and superheroes we've seen this summer. A total of $28 million is enough to win the weekend with ease.
The Smurfs 2
The Smurfs sequel could only manage $5.7 million on Friday after taking in $9.5 million over Wednesday and Thursday. On this weekend in 2011, The Smurfs started with $13.2 million and a $35.6 million weekend. Fortunately, the sequel will not come close to matching that total in five days. Unfortunately, the worldwide grosses will likely guarantee the existence of a Smurfs 3. A weekend of $17.7 million is about where it will end up, with $27.2 million over five days.
The Wolverine
Hugh Jackman's latest go as Wolverine falls 69% from last Friday to $6.4 million, which is still good for second place on Friday despite a lack of anything that could be considered legs. A second weekend of $19.6 million seems to be its fate.
