Insidious Chapter 2

Friday the 13th brings one of the most stunning days of box office of 2013 as Insidious Chapter 2 opens with a fantastic $20.1 million. Not only does this crush the entire opening weekend of Insidious from April 2011 ($13.2 million), it also beats the opening day of July's The Conjuring (also directed by James Wan and starring Patrick Wilson, which started with $17 million. Move over, Paranormal Activity, there's a new horror franchise in town. While not as well reviewed as The Conjuring or the first Insidious, this is a tremendous win for FilmDistrict, as Chapter 2 cost a mere $5 million to make.

There are a few factors working against Insidious 2 in the internal multiplier department, including yesterday being Friday the 13th, but it's still in line for a very good weekend. With a 2.3 for the weekend, it would mean an awesome weekend of $46.2 million.

The Family

The Robert DeNiro/Michelle Pfeiffer "comedy" The Family started with $5 million on Friday. It certainly could've been worse, but it's pretty barren out there so there was some room for a new comedy, even though you feel like you have to go back in time 20 years and show DeNiro what his career has become. Anyway, look for a decent weekend of $14 million for The Family.
