Friday Box Office Analysis

Prisoners
Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhall and Terrence Howard combine to give Prisoners a surprisingly decent Friday of $7 million. Prisoners found the right combination of star power and strong reviews to give audiences a reason to check out the crime thriller in what's been a weak September at the movies. It should have a decent remainder of the weekend as it draws out some older audiences due to the good reviews and some light Oscar buzz. A weekend of $20.7 million is a pretty big win for Prisoners.
Battle of the Year
Meanwhile, dance movie Battle of the Year musters only $1.5 million on Friday, which is probably several dollars too many for anything involving Chris Brown. Let's give it $3.6 million for the weekend and never speak of it again.
Insidious Chapter 2
Last weekend's big winner, Insidious Chapter 2, takes a predictable nosedive of 77% from last Friday to $4.6 million. A weekend of $13.3 million should be in the works, which is all gravy for FilmDistrict.
