Friday Box Office Analysis

Rio 2
The animated sequel starts out with $12 million, just enough to edge Captain America on Friday. This is just ahead of the $10.3 million Rio started back in 2011 on its way to a $39.2 million weekend. Despite no Angry Birds tie-in (Flappy Bird clearly missed out on a tremendous marketing opportunity), Rio 2 continues the trend of successful family films in 2014, after The LEGO Movie, Mr. Peabody and Sherman and even The Nut Job. Rio 2 should take down the weekend with a total of $43.6 million.
Oculus
Not to be confused with Oculus Rift, horror entry Oculus earns $4.9 million on Friday. It’s been a light year for horror so far but Oculus does not seem to be the movie horror fans chose to scratch the itch. Look for a weekend of $13.2 million.
Draft Day
The movie disguised as an ad for the NFL Draft is also about as successful as the Cleveland Browns, with just $3.6 million on Friday. Give it a weekend of $9.8 million.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Cap drops a not very surprising 68% from last Friday to $11.9 million. It appears Rio has bumped Winter Soldier out of the top spot despite opening to $95 million last week, but it’s still well ahead of what The First Avenger had earned at this point. A second weekend of $38 million keeps things rolling along just fine.
