Friday Box Office Analysis

Furious 7
After last weekend’s ridiculous opening, Hollywood mostly took this weekend off, so Furious 7 plummets 64% from last Friday to $18.8 million, which by itself would almost good enough to win the weekend. By the end of the weekend, Furious 7 will be the top earner in the Fast and Furious franchise, passing the $238 million earned by Fast and Furious 6. It somehow should not be possible for an action film franchise to continually grow its audience, but here we are. This Friday-to-Friday drop is actually better than both the last entry (73%!) and Fast Five (69%) but this does give us a good idea of where it’ll end up on the weekend. It’s a second weekend of $60.2 million as Furious 7 rapidly heads towards the $300 million mark.
The Longest Ride
The only new wide release this weekend, the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation takes in $5.5 million on Friday. The last Sparks novel to hit theaters was last fall’s The Best of Me, which started with $4.1 million, so this is an improvement, mostly by virtue of having considerably less competition for date night dollars. The Longest Ride will come in with a better than expected $13.3 million on the weekend.
The Woman in Gold
Expanding from 258 theaters to over 1,500, The Woman in Gold earns $1.8 million, a 190% increase from last Friday (which, amusingly, is not the best or even second best Friday-to-Friday increase in the top ten). Starring Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds, it’s going to be a good choice for older audiences in areas where it’s playing, and should come in with a weekend of $5.7 million.
Notable Holdovers
With a considerably weak lower half of the box office, a couple of expansions sneak into Friday’s top ten. Al Pacino’s Danny Collins takes ninth with $465,000 in 739 theaters, while Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young, starring Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts, places 10th with $400,000 in just 246 theaters. Both will probably get shoved out of the top ten by next weekend, but both films will land in this weekend’s chart as they each earn a bit over $1 million.
