Office Christmas Party

The holiday-themed comedy is the top film on Friday with $6.5 million. This is a decent enough start for it, as we’re two weeks away Christmas, when the holiday box office boost really starts kicking in, which is when Office Christmas Party (which frankly looks better than it has any right to be) is likely to make the bulk of its box office. It pretty much just needs to not collapse entirely next weekend, which it might manage to do despite Rogue One crushing everything else in its path. For this weekend, there's a close race between it and Moana, but despite the strong weekend from the Disney film, Office Christmas Party should pull it out. It’s looking at a good enough $17.5 million.

Nocturnal Animals

An Oscar hopeful expanding to 1,262 theaters, Nocturnal Animals earned $1.1 million on Friday. Looking to position Amy Adams as a Best Actress nominee, it’s got mostly positive reviews, largely mostly raving about Adams’ performance, but it’s probably a little too stylish and pretentious to break out further. This weekend, give it about $3.3 million.

Miss Sloane

An Oscar hopeful expanding to 1,648 theaters, Miss Sloane earned $650,000 on Friday. Looking to position Jessica Chastain as a Best Actress nominee, it’s got mostly positive reviews, largely raving about Chastain’s performance, and okay you get the joke here. Despite more screens, it’s doing worse than Nocturnal Animals as it gets a little too inside baseball regarding the inner workings of lobbyists and Big Government and that’s not the type of thing that sells tickets. It’s going to come in with about $2 million this weekend.

La La Land

La La Land earned about $300,000 on Friday - which would not be exceptionally notable, were it not for the fact that it’s playing in just 5 NY/LA theaters. A stone cold lock for multiple Oscar nominations, including Picture, Director, both Acting awards and Screenplay, if you haven’t heard about it yet, you’re going to be sick of the hype in a month. It’s probably not making the top ten this weekend, but the expansion will be interesting to watch.
