Friday Box Office Analysis

The Dark Tower
The much anticipated (and much reviled by critics) Stephen King adaptation of The Dark Tower wins Friday with $7.7 million. Sorry, nerds. It’s got a small lead over Dunkirk on Friday but we might be looking at a photo finish, with The Dark Tower likely to not have a great weekend due to the awful reviews and a small fanboy factor at play. Dark Tower should come out on top, but just barely. Look for a weekend of $18.3 million.
Kidnap
Halle Berry’s Kidnap manages $3.7 million on Friday, slightly above expectations. The action thriller is notable mainly in that it’s the first wide release from independent distributor Aviron Pictures, it’s looking at a weekend of $10 million.
Detroit
Expanding to wide release after an okay limited performance last weekend, Detroit could only take in $2.6 million in 3,000 theaters. Despite its pedigree (directed by Kathryn Bigelow, director of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty), the subject matter is a rather tough sell for a wide release and the box office shows. Detroit will wind up with a weekend of $7.8 million.
Dunkirk
Dunkirk is in contention for the rare summer threepeat at the top, but The Dark Tower has enough of a lead on Friday that it should come out ahead at the end. It adds another $5 million (down 36% from last Friday) to give it $120.9 million to date, and if there’s any summer release that’s definitely in the Oscar conversation, this one’s it. Dunkirk looks for a $17 million weekend.
