Friday Box Office Analysis

It
The second Friday for It comes in at $19.2 million, a number that most analysts were expecting to be the opening day take. That’s a Friday-to-Friday decline of 62% but it doesn’t matter. It will have crossed $200 million by the end of the weekend (and perhaps by the end of today) and another weak crop of new releases this weekend means that Friday’s total alone would have been enough to win the weekend. It (which let it be said, the title really makes for awkward sentence structure) begins its march to $300 million with a second weekend of $62 million.
American Assassin
American Assassin (clearly the working title Generic Action Movie was decided to be too on the nose) managed $5.7 million on Friday, good for second place. Mostly because your theater choices consist of seeing this, It, or nothing, it’s coming in with a somewhat better than expected $16 million for the weekend, though it will vanish swiftly from here.
Mother!
Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! earned $3 million and an F CinemaScore on Friday. Yes, I’m just as shocked as you that mainstream audiences had no idea what they were buying tickets for. Even the draw of Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t enough here, as it’ll come in with $7 million on the weekend and will probably be hailed as a cult classic years from now.
