Friday Numbers Analysis
By Tim Briody
April 3, 2004
In what is sure to be a revolving door at the box office, Hellboy gets April off to a big start.
Hellboy
Hellboy gets off to a solid start with an estimated $8.9 million Friday. Being a lesser-known comic book adaptation, the likely best comparison for Hellboy is Daredevil, which managed a 2.94 in February 2003. That figure gives Hellboy a $26.2 million weekend.
Walking Tall
The Rock's Walking Tall made an estimated $5.2 million Friday, which is off a bit from last fall's The Rundown. That film had a 3.07 multiplier, and once again, this film slides perfectly into that number as well. Give Walking Tall a $15.9 million weekend.
Home on the Range
The latest Disney animated offering earned an estimated $4 million Friday. Comparisons for this are rather tough to make. Pixar movies are a whole different ball game, last year's Brother Bear had an odd two-day weekend release and traditionally, Disney's animated films had summer releases. Definitely the choice for families this weekend, Home on the Range should finish with around $15.2 million.
The Prince and Me
Julia Stiles' The Prince and Me took in an estimated $3.5 million Friday. This number doesn't seem too impressive, but you figure those behind Ella Enchanted, The Girl Next Door and 13 Going On 30 have to quietly be celebrating. The Prince and Me looks to earn $9.8 million for the weekend.
Notable Holdovers
Scooby-Doo 2 plummets 56.7% from last Friday, which was to be expected. It'll be lucky to escape the weekend with a 50% decline.
Not even Tom Hanks can give the Coen brothers a leggy film. The Ladykillers drops 45.7% from last Friday, and the best it can hope for is around a 40% drop from last weekend.
The best holdover of last weekend's releases is Jersey Girl, but a 40.8% decline isn't exactly cause for celebration. With a little bit of luck, a weekend decline of under 35% would greatly help its chances to become Kevin Smith's highest grossing film.
