Friday Box Office Analysis

We at BOP hope you have a good excuse for reading this right now instead of seeing Kill Bill.
Kill Bill: Volume 2
The second installment of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films earned an estimated $10.7 million Friday, a solid 29% increase from the first day figure of Vol. 1. We'll find out tomorrow whether the release of Vol. 1 on DVD this week contributed to an increased fanboy rush opening night or if Miramax's marketing idea backfired. In the meantime, we'll lower the 2.7 internal multiplier Vol. 1 earned back in the fall by a couple of notches and give Kill Bill: Vol. 2 $26.5 million for the weekend.
The Punisher
The Punisher gets started with a not-bad estimated $5.2 million Friday. Hellboy's 2.68 multiplier from a couple of weeks ago is a perfect fit here, and the comic book adaptation should end the weekend with $13.9 million.
Connie and Carla
With an estimated $1.1 million Friday and likely $3 million weekend, look for "Whatever Happened To Nia Vardalos?" articles any day now.
Notable Holdovers
After its nearly unprecedented return to the top spot at the box office, The Passion of the Christ falls an amusing 82.5% from last Friday, though it should still be a mainstay of the top ten for a few more weeks.
None of last weekend's non-starters have their fortunes improve in weekend number two. It's greater than 50% declines all around (except for Johnson Family Vacation, down a mere 45%).
