Friday Numbers Analysis
Unbreaking News: Anchorman strongest opener, Spider-Man 2 still on top
By Tim Briody
July 10, 2004
Anchorman
Will Ferrell's latest comedy earned an estimated $11 million Friday, coming in a bit ahead of last November's Elf, which opened to $8.9 million. The holiday comedy had a 3.47 multiplier, but comparing November internal multipliers to July ones doesn't work. Anchorman should end up with a 2.8 multiplier and a classy $30.8 million for the weekend.
King Arthur
Jerry Bruckheimer's attempt at Pirates of the Carribean 2004 only took in an estimated $5 million Friday. That's even more disappointing after earning $8.4 million since Wednesday. As for the weekend, we'll be on the generous side and give the popcorn flick $15.5 million over the weekend, and $24 million over five days.
Sleepover
Lost in the shuffle this week is Sleepover, with an estimated Friday take of $1.7 million. If it ever finds an audience, it'll do so on DVD. Sleepover looks to end up with around $5 million for the weekend.
Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2 falls 56.8% from last Friday with $14 million, bringing it to $225.25 million after ten days of release. It's not going to duplicate the performance of Spider-Man in its second weekend, though a weekend drop of less than 50% is still very impressive, considering the numbers we're dealing with.
