Friday Box Office Analysis

There's no word yet on whether Mr. & Mrs. Smith's Friday box office includes Jennifer Aniston's admission.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Who says there's such a thing as bad publicity. The Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie vehicle Mr. & Mrs. Smith opened to a fantastic $18.6 million Friday, blowing away everything else in theaters. It's a badly needed hit for both stars, as Pitt hadn't had much success at the box office recently outside of Ocean's Eleven and Twelve and Jolie was rapidly becoming more famous just for being extremely good looking (and ruining Pitt's marriage to Jennifer Aniston). There may have been a bit of Friday night rush factor here, but the appeal to adult audiences will more than carry it through the weekend and beyond. We'll give it a 3.0 internal multiplier, good for a $55.8 million weekend.
The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3-D
Robert Rodriguez's kiddie adventure opened to $3.9 million Friday, a number under the opening for all the Spy Kids movies. With that slight an opening, it's going to be looking at a fairly strong, family-friendly multiplier for the weekend. It should be able to tally a 3.6 from Friday-to-Sunday, giving Shark Boy and Lava Girl a three-day total of $14 million.
The Honeymooners
Bang, zoom to the moon! Or, you know, not. The remake of the Honeymooners took in a measly $1.8 million Friday. I have nothing more to say about this other than a 2.7 multiplier and $4.8 million weekend.
Notable Holdovers
Madagascar drops only 38.6% as it gives up the top slot to Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The DreamWorks computer animated production continues as one of the leggier films out there, with a decline as low as 30% for the weekend.
Cinderella Man turns into a pumpkin as it falls 51.1% from last Friday. The Russell Crowe film should really have held better. Its fortunes may improve a little bit over the remainder of the weekend, but a decline in the range of 45% or so looks likely.
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants slips 45.6% from a week ago, showing it doesn't have much staying power with its target audience. An overall decline of 40-43% should be in its future.
Lords of Dogtown falls a whopping 73% from a week ago, and a best case scenario is a 65% weekend decline for one of the easily forgettable films of the summer.
