Friday Box Office Analysis

Box office slumping? Just add Spielberg!
War of the Worlds
The Steven Spielberg/Tom Cruise collaboration took in $23.1 million Friday, adding to the $36.2 million it earned on Thursday and Friday. It's no Spider-Man 2, but it's certainly a welcome change from the lackluster box office year. With a holiday Sunday and Monday ahead, War of the Worlds should be looking at a healthy weekend sum of $80.8 million, giving it a six-day tally of $117 million.
Rebound
And the answer is, "What Martin Lawrence's career did not do this weekend." The basketball "comedy" earned a mere $1.7 million Friday, and has an absolute best-case scenario of $6 million in its future over the four-day period, with less being completely possible.
Notable Holdovers
Bewitched drops 55.8% from last Friday, which might actually not be bad considering how poorly received it was. The holiday reduces the bleeding a little bit, as a decline of 40% is in the works.
Herbie: Fully Loaded shows a bit of staying power, falling only 32.2% from a week ago. The weekend will be extra kind and may reduce the overall weekend drop to the lower 20s. Lindsay Lohan will celebrate by eating a morsel of food.
Land of the Dead absolutely collapses, falling a mammoth 79.4% from last Friday's take.. Not too much more needs to be said here.
