Vera Drake wins at Venice
Director Mike Leigh's Vera Drake, which tells the story of a good Samaritan abortionist, won the Golden Lion for best film at the Venice International Film Festival. Star Imelda Staunton also picked up the Best Actress award. Vera Drake had been rejected by the Cannes Film Festival. The movie was filmed on a tight $8.5 million budget and will be released by Fine Line, New Line's specialty arm, in October.
