Strike halts Shantaram
Production on Shantaram, a film starring Johnny Depp, has halted due to the WGA strike. Among the reasons for the delay is that the film's script is not up to the filmmakers' standards, and the current strike prohibits revisions.

Nair to Direct Depp Flick
Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding; Vanity Fair) will direct Shantaram for Warner Bros. Johnny Depp will star in the film, about an Australian heroin addict who escapes from prison and decides to reinvent himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay, India. But his need to find medicine eventually leads him into the world of counterfeiting, gun-running and smuggling. Peter Weir was previously set as the director but dropped out of the project last summer. Production may begin this Fall, with a potential 2008 release date.

Weir goes to Shantaram
Peter Weir is set to direct Shantaram for Warner Bros. The film is an adaptation of a novel by Gregory David Roberts, and has Johnny Depp signed for the lead role. Weir will work on the screenplay along with Eric Roth, with production planned for late 2006. The movie will center on an Australian heroin addict who escapes from a maximum security prison and goes on to re-invent himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay, India. When he tries to find medicine for his patients, he eventually gets involved in a life of smuggling, counterfeiting and gun-running.

Writer goes to Shantaram
Eric Roth, who won an Academy Award for his screenplay for Forrest Gump, has been set to adapt the screenplay for Shantaram by Warner Bros. He takes over for author Gregory David Roberts, on whose book the film is based. The movie is being developed as a starring vehicle for Johnny Depp, and centers on an Australian heroin addict who escapes from a maximum security prison where he's doing a stint for robbery. He goes into hiding in India, where he lives in the slums of Bombay, posing as a doctor. Soon, he's working as a gunrunner, counterfeier, and smuggler before going to Afghanistan to fight against Russian troops who are invading that country.

Depp stars in Shantaram
Warner Bros., Brad Grey and Graham King have acquired the rights to the Gregory David Roberts novel Shantaram, with Johnny Depp attached to both produce and star. The book is set in the 1980s and details a fictional adventure based on the real-life escapades of the author. Protag, an Australian heroin addict who has been convicted of robbery, escapes from the maximum security prison where he is serving his term. After fleeing to India, he reinvents himself, serving as a doctor to the residents of Bombay's slums. He becomes involved with numerous crimes, including counterfeiting, gun-running and smuggling, which eventually takes him to Afghanistan. There, he and a mob boss take on the Russians.
The book will make its U.S. debut next week.
