English and friends finally prepping The Women

At long last, it looks like Diane English will finally get her long-in-development remake of the 1939 film The Women off the ground. English will direct, and performers such as Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Debra Messing and Candice Bergen have already committed to star in the film or are very close to signing on the dotted line. Picturehouse will distribute the movie in 2008. The original movie was directed by George Cukor and follows a group of female friends. Their perspectives change when the one everyone envied most of all discovers that her husband has been cheating on her.

The Women return

A remake of the 1939 classic Joan Crawford film The Women is in the works after having been brewing in the concept stage for some time. New Line Cinema is set to distribute and co-finance the project with Ascendant Pictures and Capitol Films. The screenplay was written by Diane English from a play by Clare Booth Luce. English will also make her directorial debut on the film, which has Meg Ryan, Ashley Judd, Annette Bening and Sandra Bullock in negotiations to star. Uma Thurman is also being considered for a role. The original film starred Crawford, Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell and is playwright Luce's attack on her own gender. In the film, one of the women discovers her husband is having an affair, and her friends react to the situation. The studio had determined that a movie targeted at such a specifically female demographic has a pretty good shot at success in light of the popularity of such television shows as Desperate Housewives and Sex in the City.
