Dimension catches a Piranha
Dimension Films has acquired domestic distribution rights to Piranha, the remake of the 1978 film. Chuck Russell is directing from a screenplay he wrote himself. The story uses elements of various drafts as well as stuff from the original film, directed by Joe Dante and written by John Sayles. The update will be set at Arizona's Lake Havasu, a vacation hotspot that becomes an area of terror when a group of piranha swim through a crack in a crater caused by an eruption at the bottom of the lake.

Chiller Films goes to Piranha
Chiller Films is set to remake the 1978 Joe Dante horror flick Piranha. Chuck Russell will write the update of the screenplay, which will incorporate elements from the Josh Stolberg/Peter Goldfinger spec script Killer Fish along with portions of the John Sayles script for the original film. In the 1978 version, a prehistoric strain of the fish is let loose by an underground tremor, just in time for college students to show up for vacation and fun in the lake where they inhabit.
