Paramount gets Smurfy
Paramount has picked up the film rights to the Smurfs and are in the planning process for a 3D CGI film for Nickelodeon Movies. They're looking to create a trilogy of films in this manner, with the first one to be released in 2008 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs. They originated in 1958 as a Belgian comic strip by Pevo Culliford. Then, in 1981, NBC had an animated series that ran for 256 episodes and won numerous Emmy awards. Herb Ratner will write the screenplay.
