Universal buys rights to character from Robert Ludlum estate
Universal made a deal with Robert Ludlum's estate, giving the studio exclusive rights to the Jason Bourne character and first look at other Ludlum novels. The film series was originally slated to be a trilogy. But because of its success at the box office, the studio envisions the franchise as its answer to James Bond.

Bourne Ultimatum scribe tapped for next sequel
Universal selected George Nolfi to write the next installment of the Jason Bourne franchise. This time, the movie will be based on an original story since Robert Ludlum only wrote three Bourne novels. Director of the first two sequels, Paul Greengrass, and the franchise's star, Matt Damon, are both attached to the new movie.
