Freedomland no longer an Oscar contender
Revolution Studios has moved the release of Freedomland from December to February, deciding that it didn't feel like a small film. They're hoping it performs in a manner similar to Ransom did in that same time frame. The movie will now open on February 17th, the beginning of President's Day weekend. This move removes the film from Oscar consideration for 2005 (and likely 2006 as well, since early year releases are rarely remembered come Academy Awards time).

Freedomland goes for Oscar
Columbia Pictures has set an exclusive release for Freedomland for December 23, 2005 in New York and Los Angeles. The short-term release is to make the film eligible for Academy Awards consideration, and then it would expand to a nationwide release on January 13, 2006. The movie is directed by Joe Roth and is based on a novel by Richard Price. The mystery/drama stars Samuel L. Jackson, Julianne Moore and Edie Falco.

Falco goes to Freedomland
The Sopranos' Edie Falco will star along with Julianne Moore and Samuel L. Jackson in Freedomland for Joe Roth and Revolution Studios. Roth, who heads up Revolution, is directing. The movie is an adaptation of Richard Price's bestselling novel.
Along with Falco, other new cast members include Ron Eldard, William Forsythe, Anthony Mackie and Aunjanue Ellis. The complicated story centers on a white woman who stumbles into an emergency room, claiming that a black man stole her car with her four-year-old son still in the back seat. Lorenzo Council, a veteran detective, has been assigned to investigate the case. He has reservations about the woman's story, but still sets out on a major search for the abducted boy.
In addition to the detective's concerns, an ambitious young reporter for the local paper also suspects that the mother is trying to hide something and befriends her. As the search for the alleged carjacker intensifies, racial tensions threaten to break the city apart.

Roth goes to Freedomland
Revolution Studios is in negotiations to have its studio head, Joe Roth, direct the adaptation of the bestselling novel Freedomland. Julianne Moore and Samuel L. Jackson, who were previously attached to the film before it went into turnaround at Paramount, are in talks to star. Author Richard Price directed his gritty novel to screenplay himself. The story centers around a carjacking that turns into a racially charged media situation. Revolution is hoping to release the film in late 2005.
