Fox sicks popular Great Dane on movie audiences
Fox tapped director Tom Dey to develop a big-screen adaptation of Brad Anderson’s Marmaduke comic. The strip, about a Great Dane who lives with the Winslow family, has been running continuously since 1954. Dey’s directorial credits include Shanghai Noon, Showtime, and Failure to Launch.
The dog has appeared in a number of television episodes featuring comic strip characters who made the jump from the page to the small screen, including Heathcliff and Garfield and Friends. The movie would be the pooch’s first theatrical production.
Perhaps the surprise success of Fox 2000/Regency Enterprises’ Alvin and the Chipmunks brought on the Marmaduke adaptation. That movie, which mixed CGI with live-action human characters, made more than $350 million worldwide. A sequel is scheduled for release on Christmas Day.
No word at this time whether the Marmaduke feature will be live-action, CGI or a mix of the two. The project is still very early in development.
