Nick Nolte, everbody's favorite Hawaiian shirt wearing drunkard, has to decided the best way to follow up his soulful, underplayed effort in the Good Thief is to again go indie. He has signed on to frontline this production based on an idea from directorial legend Terrence Malick.

The story is told from the perspective of Binh, a Vietnamese man raised by his mother. As Binh enters his 20s, he begins to lament the lack of a male figure in his life. The driven young man decides to board a refugee ship destined for America. He is joined by Ling (the sumptuous jewel Bai Ling), a young woman who is intrigued by the thought of journeying to a new country which is filled with the promise of a better life.

The all-important role of Binh has been given to virtual unknown Damien Nguyen. The captain of the ship is played by Mr. Orange himself, Tim Roth. The script has been given a re-write by Larry Gross, who has demonstrated a deft touch for this genre in the Jeremy Irons/Gong Li/Maggie Cheung masterpiece, Chinese Box.

Beautiful Country is thematically similar in tone to The Quiet American. As that film dealt with an American's involvement in a foreign country during military conflict, this one will examine the fallout on Nolte's character after a similar experience. The movie was well received at its debut at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2004. Director Hans Petter Moland (Aberdeen) was nominated for his work on the movie. (David Mumpower/BOP)
