Underworld
Release Date:

A long time ago, I ran into a movie called, "The Werewolves are coming! The Rats are here!", and somehow, that same sort of feeling comes into this movie. Guaranteed to bring a lump to the throats of serious Goths, and a smile to the fanboys that dig Pearl Harbor for the romance, Kate Beckinsale stars (pretty much alone) in this horror/action flick.
The premise of the movie is huge and contains multitudes. Add in a lot of the Blade movies, some Hatfield and McCoy with vampires and werewolves as the feuders fighting over and with Mr. Inbetween. Throw in a lot of butt-kicking, wirework, leather pants, dark sets and a little forbidden love, and set the whole thing in....Budapest. (Budapest??) Did I mention people dressed in black doing a lot of butt-kicking? Women dressed in black leather pants kicking...man, I have to stop watching that Matrix trailer. And since it's a modern horror film, the vampires and werewolves whack each other both with high-tech weapons and big, big swords. Shiny.
The biggest obvious negative is that the cast and top guns on the movie are serious newbies. The director has only done music videos (most notoriously for Megadeth), and it's start-up time for the scripter and almost all of the cast. Sony handed it over to Screen Gems (the B-movie section) for making the movie. So it's going to be interesting to guess as to how well this should do. (Jim Rittenhouse/BOP)
