Swimming Upstream tells the true story of Tony Fingleton, played by Jesse Spencer (Uptown Girls). Based on a screenplay and novel by Fingleton himself, the story is set in 1950s Brisbane, Australia.

Tony is a young man from a turbulent and dysfunctional family. His father (Geoffrey Rush) is an overbearing alcoholic who barely even notices Tony, as he is constantly overshadowed by his brothers. His mother, who has suffered long and heroically as a result of the unusual family dynamic, is quietly supportive. When Tony displays an exceptional talent for swimming, he finally believes that he may have a chance to win his father's heart. Not only that, but our protagonist also has a very real chance to win Olympic gold.

So far, Swimming Upstream has made several appearances at various film festivals in addition to being nominated for several awards in Australia. It looks to be an inspirational movie in the tradition of Breaking the Waves, and should find some critical success upon its North American release. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
