House of D
Release Date:
April 15, 2005
Limited release
A man having problems with relationships in the present tries to solve his difficulties by exploring his past. In the process, he rediscovers the bonds he shares with friends and family, and remembers the many escapades he shared with his best friend, a mentally-challenged janitor at his high school.
House of D was written and directed by X-Files star David Duchovny, who also takes the lead role in the film. Although Duchovny has written and directed episodes of the TV show in which he first came to prominence, this is his first big-screen effort, and it seems as though he is keeping the canvas small and personal, which can sometimes be an advantage for a first-time writer/director. Of course, his film will be gaining a great deal more attention from the outset than many a first effort, given Duchovny has cast some of his famous family and friends in leading roles, most notably Robin Williams as the janitor. What remains to be seen is exactly what Duchovny's vision is for this somewhat personal outing, and how well he translates it to the screen. This has the potential to be a truly moving and unique film, or a vanity project for a star and his production company. One tends to think it may well be the former, however, given the eclectic nature of the roles Duchovny has chosen since parting company with the TV series that made him a star. Certainly the synopsis holds promise, and with Robin Williams as a costar, the film should be an intriguing addition to the 2004 release slate. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
