Eros is an anthology of three medium-length films from a trio of extraordinary directors - Steven Soderbergh, Wong Kar Wai and Michaelangelo Antonioni. The complete project is considered an homage from Soderbergh and Wong to Antonioni, a director who has inspired both men. Each man has his own take on theme of love, sexuality and eroticism.
Wong's The Hand is in keeping with much of his work and is described as textured and emotional. It describes a young tailor's (Chang Chen) enduring, unrequited love for a gorgeous Hong Kong courtesan (Gon Li). As years go by, he devotes his loving touch to the clothes she wears for other men. Time passes, and she slowly loses everything. Meantime, the tailor finds prosperity.
Soderbergh replaced Pedro Almodovar when the Spanish director dropped off the project. The Soderbergh section is called Equilibrium, and centers around a tense 1950s advertising man (Robert Downey Jr.). He's been having recurring erotic dreams; as a result, he goes to see psychiatrist Dr. Pearl (Alan Arkin). While in session, he describes his dream ' it has a woman who seems familiar, but he can't remember who she is when he awakens. As we watch him undergo a very unusual brand of therapy, we learn the reason why.
Antonioni's The Dangerous Thread of Things is a philosophical mediation that examines a married couple in their 40s (Christopher Buchholz and Regina Nemni). The pair no longer has anything to say to each other. As a result, the man has a wild one-night stand with a free-spirited young lady (Luisa Ranieri), but in the end, he finds the experience dissatisfying. Later, the wife and the girl meet each other.
