Some of the unlikeliest films have been getting sequels lately. In late 2007, we saw the release of Elizabeth: The Golden Age, which was a follow-up to the Academy Award nominated Elizabeth. Now, we have a de facto sequel to City of God, the well-regarded Fernando Meirelles film that received four Oscar nominations.
This time around, however, Meirelles will not direct, but will be involved in the project as producer. Instead, Paolo Morelli will be at the helm, directing from a screenplay by Elena Soarez (House of Sand).
The movie centers on two teenagers, Acerola and Laranjinha, who have grown up in a culture of gang warfare and violence. In the midst of it all, they have become the closest of friends, thinking of each other as brothers. Their 18th birthdays are on the way, and Laranjinha is seeking out a father he has never met. Meanwhile, Acerola is attempting to raise a son. The two friends soon find themselves on opposite ends of a gang battle, which obviously is going to test the very limits of their relationship - including the revelation of a terrible secret from their past.
