From Executive Producer Magic Johnson comes this movie that has the misfortune of having the same subject matter and themes as another film that will hit theaters at approximately the same time. Hair Show, originally titled Beauty Shop, bears a great deal of similarity to Queen Latifah's Beauty Shop, a de facto spin-off of the Barbershop films. Hair Show was even once titled Beauty Shop itself, but clearly backed off that title in light of the fact that Latifah's comedy got its marketing off the ground far faster - not to mention that Beauty Shop has a substantially larger studio pulling the money strings.
Hair Show centers around a spirited hair stylist from Baltimore named Peaches (Mo'Nique). Peaches sets off to Beverly Hills to attend a celebration for her estranged sister, Angela (Kellitta Smith). Angela is the owner of an upscale beauty salon in that posh area, and spark quickly begin to fly when Angela learns that Peaches is actually on the run from the IRS and has only a month to pay $50,000 in back taxes. Though the sisters go through some (purportedly hilarious) fights, they eventually join forces to fight off a rival salon owner named Marcella (Gina Torres of Firefly). They plan to solve Peaches' problems by competing for a big cash prize and all of the "celebrity" that accompanies it at the city's annual hair show.
Along with comedienne Mo'Nique, Smith and Torres, Hair Show has a solid cast. Kill Bill's Vivica A. Fox is aboard, along with Greg Germann (Ally McBeal), and tennis pro Serena Williams. Look for the film to be well-received amongst its target demographic, particularly since Magic Johnson has had a great deal of success with a chain of theaters he owns. He'll almost certainly do his best to be playing this film in a majority of them. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
