In 2003, creative genius Martin Scorsese took it upon himself to head up an intricate project comprised of numerous forms of media to celebrate the blues and get to the roots of American music. That project resulted in a TV series, 20 CDs and seven DVDs. The ultimate celebration comes in the form of this documentary from director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), as he filmed the Radio City Music Hall benefit concert that kicked everything off.

The film spans numerous generations of blues artists and incorporates performers from other genres as well. Natalie Cole performs a version of W.C. Handy's St Louis Blues, while B.B. King sings alongside Bonnie Raitt. Other musicians who appear onstage include Aerosmith, Macy Gray, Buddy Guy, Dr. John, Solomon Burke, and Vernon Reid. The footage intersperses interviews throughout the performances. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
