Amalia is a 16-year-old girl who lives with her mother in a gorgeous, expansive hotel where a wintertime medical convention is taking place. She's just beginning to be fascinated with the Catholic concept of "vocation", which she has been learning about at school. After choir rehearsals, she gets together with some other girls her age to talk about their faith, but in secret, they're also whispering about the excitement of kissing boys.
As the medical convention continues, Amalia has a chance encounter with one of the doctors, who presses himself up against her. This brief rendezvous leads our heroine to believe she has found her calling, and determines that it is her "vocation" to save him from sin. Of course, her real interest in him is probably a lot closer to puppy love.
The Holy Girl is Lucretia Martel's follow up to La Cienaga, and was considered to be one of the more impressive entries at Cannes in 2004. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
