Digg Button
From director Brian Robbins, the man who brought us such masterworks as Good Burger and Eddie Murphy’s Oscar-killing farce Norbit, comes yet another reason why the movie industry could benefit from independent auditing.

In Meet Dave, a crew of tiny aliens who look just like humans come to New York in a ship resembling a human being in the hopes of saving their home planet (Perhaps we could school them in international relations?). However, the plan goes slightly awry (you didn’t think this would be a run-of-the-mill infiltration, did you?) when the ship’s pilot becomes smitten with an Earth woman. Since Eddie Murphy is joining forces with Brian Robbins once again, I’m sure that vomit-inducing hilarity will ensue.

The sad thing is this: If history is any predictor, then Meet Dave will make more than enough money to keep Robbins in front of a camera and Murphy in Italian slacks. The aforementioned Norbit still managed to take in $95 million dollars that would actually be better invested in airline stocks. Also, Robbins’ completely unnecessary Shaggy Dog (though not a Murphy film) managed to get enough children to drag their parents kicking and screaming into the theater to rack up $61 million. I guess if there’s a project out there that will appeal to children or developmentally challenged adults, the script will land on his desk.

Will Brian Robbins get one right this time? Will Eddie Murphy claim the Oscar glory that should have been his? Will enough people get to the theater and fork over the cash to keep this kind of tripe wagon rolling? Tune in next time (or don’t, please) for another episode of Meet Dave! (Bart Lasater/BOP)
