Julie Taymor has had a variety of small successes with films that have achieved critical acclaim and awards recognition. Both Frida and Titus are films that received attention from the Academy, and she's also known for her direction of the wildly popular Broadway musical adaptation of The Lion King. Having experience in the musical realm will serve her well with this next project, an original musical.
Set in the 1960s, this fictional love story takes place amid wild anti-war protests, civil rights uprisings, mind exploration and the explosion of rock and roll. The story will move from the simplicity of the high school years and college to the Detroit riots, the battlefields of Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool. The movie will combine live action with painted and three-dimensional animation, and will accompanied by the multitude of Beatles songs that came to define the time. The cast members will sing and dance to those classic tunes. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
