18/21 Jason Lee Despite clunky direction, the pic works thanks to a luminous performance by Diane Lane
153/196 Max Braden I liked The Notebook because of the chemistry and the epic nature of the story. This romance feels nothing but scripted.

Novels by Nicholas Sparks have been reliable earners, with 1999's Message in a Bottle earning $52.8 milion, 2002's A Walk To Remember taking $41.2 million in January 2002 and 2004's The Notebook taking in $81 million. That streak certainly looks to continue with the big screen adaptation of Nights in Rodanthe, published in 2002.

Nights in Rodanthe stars Diane Lane and Richard Gere in a story of a chance meeting (and eventual affair) between a doctor and an unhappy housewife in the sleepy coastal North Carolina town of Rodanthe (where most of the movie was shot). James Franco, Chris Meloni and Mae Whitman costar in a film helmed by noted Broadway director George C. Wolfe.

With an October release, perfect for this type of film, that sound you hear is many men already dreading the thought being dragged to see this by their girlfriends and wives. (Tim Briody/BOP)
