Emily Wang (Maggie Cheung) has been abandoned by friends and family in the aftermath of her rock-star husband Lee's death by drug overdose. Her own past has been filled with drugs and her own regrets, and in the end, she is given a six-month jail sentence for her part in Lee's death.
Custody of her young son Jay (James Dennis) has been granted to her husband's parents, Albrecht (Nick Nolte) and Rosemary (Martha Henry). Rosemary blames Emily for Lee's death, but Albrecht realizes that it's important for mother and son to retain a bond. Nonetheless, he insists that she change her life before she can re-establish her relationship with Jay. Albrecht's faith inspires Emily to find self-respect and reliance within herself.
To get her life back on track, Emily moves to Paris. There, she will hope to kick her own drug habit, find a job, and get her life back in order. From there, she moves on to London and San Francisco as she tries to find her place in a world that is unwilling to forgive her for her past or to accept the fact that she longs for change within herself.
