Deliver Us from Eva
Release Date:
February 7, 2003
Deliver Us from Eva is a comedy directed by Gary Hardwick, who previously helmed The Brothers. Starring Gabrielle Union (Bring it On) and LL Cool J, Eva tells the story of a group of men who pay LL Cool J $5,000 to romance the meddling sister of their girlfriends, played by Union.
This film, with its African-American cast and director, will obviously be compared to, and marketed similarly to, other movies starring and directed by African-Americans. Using these types of films as a comparison in terms of box office may be a useful gauge. Hardwick's previous film, The Brothers, earned $10.3 million in his debut weekend. Soul Food made $11.2 million ($13.5 million, adjusted to 2002 dollars) in its bow. Waiting to Exhale earned strikingly similar money in its initial weekend: $11.32 million ($13.01 million adjusted). Waiting to Exhale, benefiting from its Christmas debut, bowed at $14.13 million ($17.15 million adjusted).
Deliver Us From Eva has a chance to be as successful as these films. While Union is not the household name Whitney Houston or Angela Bassett is, she's still an appealing actress, and her performance in Bring it On was met with essentially favorable reviews. However, what may be the key to its box office success is the lack of light comedies aimed at African-American women. Just as this audience flocked to see Soul Food and Waiting to Exhale, don't be surprised if they make Eva a similar success. (Calvin Trager/BOP)
June 21, 2002 After being scheduled for an initial September 13, 2002 release, Delive Us from Eva was moved up a week, but the studio has now decided to push it all the way back to February of 2003. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
