This darkly satiric tale centers on Dean Stiffle (Jamie Bell), an alienated high school student who discovers the body of his best friend, Troy, hanging in his bedroom. Believing that none of the parents in his idyllic California neighborhood will really care, Troy doesn't bother to tell any of the parents who reside there. He's already dealing with an author father (William Fichtner) who sees him as a lab rat for his best-selling pop-psychology books, so why bother with the truth?
Meanwhile, Dean's classmates have concocted a scheme in order to get their hands on the recently deceased Troy's stash. Billy (Justin Chatwin), Crystal (Camilla Belle) and Lee (Lou Taylor Pucci) all plot a kidnapping scheme where they will abduct Dean's younger brother Charlie (Rory Culkin) and will hold him until Dean agrees to go retrieve Troy's pills. Unfortunately, this scheme goes awry, and they kidnap the wrong boy. Even worse, the wrong boy's mother (Rita Wilson) doesn't even notice his disappearance, as she is absorbed with the planning of her second wedding to town mayor Michael Ebbs (Ralph Fiennes).
And what is the Chumscrubber? It's a pop culture presence that makes itself known throughout the movie, showing up in TV cartoons, video games, T-shirts, and stickers. Think of him as Happy Bunny but perhaps with more rage.
The film will receive limited release, and should capture the attention of folks who appreciate black humor about societal mores and issues. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
